There was once my middle son dressed up with stuffing in his sleeves and pants legs to look fake. While sitting quietly on the front porch rocker, the naive folks must have thought he was fake, because there was an awful lot of screaming going on out there. So funny! So fun!

I want to share some of the fun things we’ve done over the years to stay on a budget and make or create cheap Halloween outfits. Some of the most fun family time we’ve shared has been while carving pumpkins, and of course roasting the pumpkin seeds. Yum! Even our family dog gets his occasional pet costume, which he isn’t very fond of. He just enjoys barking at all the trick-or-treaters driving up.

We always search the closet for the scary masks from years past or drag out that old makeup and ugly eyeshadow that never matched anything.

Zombie from the Haunted Graveyard

Hey, that stuff always works when you try to paint up fake bruises and smear on a little of that red fake blood. Add a couple of bandages and you’ve created the zombie from the haunted graveyard.

There was one year I made a life sized big bird costume complete with striped legs and shoe covers! That costume was used by my older son for a school honors club initiation, but it turned into one of the cheap Halloween outfits the boys sometimes quarreled over. After I bought the yellow felt, I confiscated a baby rattler out of the attic for the eyeballs. The rattler was white, I cut off the ball shaped ends, and glued them on the face. After I painted on some black pupils, it really made the eyeballs pop, and rattle!

It just takes a little bit of ingenuity, and a big desire for fun to come up with cheap Halloween outfits on a budget. They will bring back family fun memories for years to come.
